In a bold new effort to support the charity Action Aid a raft of stars have gathered to cover the classic disco track ‘I’m Every Woman’.
Action Aid is a charity that aims to highlight the plight of woman living in poverty. Today (June 8th) is the 100th anniversary of the first suffragette hunger strike, a moment when rights for women became a burning issue in British society.
In order to celebrate how far we have come, and to raise awareness of how far we can go, Action Aid have released a star-studded new track. Chaka Khan’s ‘I’m Every Woman’ is the original empowering disco track, remaining an inspirational karaoke favourite.
In an exciting new project Action Aid have brought a host of stars – led by Chaka Khan herself – together to record a cover of the track. The all star cast includes Roisin Murphy, Sinead O’Connor alongside many up and coming talents.
Micachu’s debut album ‘Jewellery’ is one of finest introductions ClashMusic have heard this year. The singer blends electronic music with pop, and even has a fine line in making her own instruments.
Launching herself with a mixtape, Micachu has recently returned to her roots with another free to download mix. Also starring on the track is thecocknbullkid and Alessi’s Ark. The song was overseen by experienced songwriter and head of Epic Records Amanda Ghost.
Titled ‘6 Degrees’ the project was inspired by the idea that the anyone on the planet is only six introductions away from anyone else. Amanda Ghost found out that she was only six steps away from a young girl named Hajara who lives in one of Kampala’s poorest slums.
The songwriter said “when I found out that I was connected to Hajara I instantly thought, I’m Every Woman. But I wanted to re-record it so that it’s darker and more melancholic.”
Kate Bishop, women’s rights campaigner for ActionAid said: “100 years on from the first suffragette hunger strike, women around the world continue to risk their lives in the ongoing fight for equality. We hope that the release of I’m Every Woman will raise awareness of the ongoing struggles women in poor countries face as they try to overcome extreme poverty.”
