Pop citizen of the world MIA has denied allegations made by Sri Lankan rapper DeLon that she supports terrorism.
MIA was forced to leave Sri Lanka at an early age due to political violence – the singer fled to the UK with her parents, where she became involved in the music industry.
DeLon accuses MIA of supporting the Tamil Tigers, a rebel group currently at war with the Sri Lankan government. MIA’s father is a political activist and founder of the Eelam Revolutionary Organisation of Students, which apparently have some links to the Tamil Tigers.
According to BBC News MIA has furiously denied allegations that she supports terrorism, stating that “I don’t support terrorism and never have”. The singer went on to say:
“As a Sri Lankan that fled war and bombings, my music is the voice of the civilian refugee. Frankly, I am not trying to start dialogue with someone who is really just seeking self-promotion.”
