Brooklyn group MGMT have spoken about their new album ‘Congratulations’ which they claim will have darker material than their debut.
MGMT formed while at college, blending psych rock with electro pop. Debut album ‘Oracular Spectacular’ was released last year and became a massive success turning the group into chart heroes.
Lead single ‘Kids’ was given a Soulwax overhaul, becoming one of 2008’s biggest dance anthems. Since then MGMT have toured widely before beginning work on their eagerly anticipated follow up.
In a recent interview singer Andrew Van Wyngarden claimed that the band’s new album. “It’s us trying to deal with all the craziness that’s been going on since our last album took off. Sometimes it just doesn’t feel natural.”
Speaking to San Francisco Examiner, the frontman revealed that the title track “is pretty dark”, before adding that Royal Trux’ singer Jennifer Herrema is due to guest on the album.
Van Wyngarden also revealed that he has taken up surfing. The cover of ‘Oracular Spectacular’ shows MGMT holding surf boards, and since the album’s release the duo have begun to surf some of the most ferocious waves on the planet.
“I’d never surfed, but for that album, I was dreaming about surfing a lot,” the frontman told San Francisco Examiner.
“I’m from New York, where you can go surfing but it’s more of an excursion and you have to go all the way out to Rockaway or Jones Beach. But I finally did it, I’m happy I did, and Malibu’s where I figured it all out,” the singer said.
MGMT are set to release ‘Congratulations’ next year.
