MF DOOM was "85%" complete on a potential 'Madvillainy' sequel.
The masked rapper teamed up with Madlib on the original, which ranks as one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever made.
Released via Stones Throw, label boss Peanut Butter Wolf attempted to prise out a sequel before the rapper's death.
Speaking to Pete Rosenberg and Cipha Sounds on a new episode of their Juan Ep Is Dead podcast, he spoke about the taught creative journey.
"DOOM was always telling me ‘It’s 85% done, it’s 85% done.’ That was the magic number," he explains, recalling that the label received 11 songs back in 2009.
At this point, though, DOOM wanted to wait until “a few more songs” were done; the material then began appearing on other artist's albums.
Peanut Butter Wolf adds: “I got a little frustrated, and I was just like, you know, ‘It’s gonna happen when it’s gonna happen.’ I don’t wanna be the guy to force creativity or anything...”
The material available to the label could yet be released, with DOOM's family giving Stones Throw the green light for a potential project.
Will it really be 'Madvillainy 2' however? “I don’t know what we’re going to do with those tracks” Wolf concludes.
