Wu Tang Clan rapper turned actor Method Man has been arrested on charges of tax evasion.
As a central member of Wu Tang Clan Method Man is one of the most influential figures in hip hop. With his melodic style the rapper helped influence a generation of MCs, Method Man then released a series of solo albums.
Amongst these was the apocalyptic ‘Tical 2000: Judgement Day’. Thankfully the world did not end as the year 2000 dawned, with Method Man going on to release a few more albums and begin an acting career.
The rapper now stars in acclaimed American drama ‘The Wire’ but it seems that the complex world of personal taxes has left Method Man facing criminal charges.
Method Man was arrested on Monday (October 5th) after an police charged him with failure to pay almost $33,000 in personal income taxes.
The arrest as confirmed in a press release from the district attorney’s office in New York’s Staten Island, reports MTV News.
Method Man could face up to four years in prison if he is found guilty. The rapper has been charged with a series of tax issues, including the repeated failure to file personal income and earnings tax.
Staten Island District Attorney Daniel Donovan claimed the rapper would not receive any special treatment. “Taxes are a burden that all citizens share in a civil society, whether you’re an average Joe on the street or a high-profile rap artist,” Donovan said in a statement.
“Because of the alleged action of people like Mr Smith, law abiding citizens face higher taxes and reduced government services.”
