Metallica could be set to begin work on a new album, after admitting that they long to write new material.
Metallica seem to exist in their own universe. The thrash legends remain one of the biggest rock groups on the planet, having taken their uniquely savage blend of metal into stadiums across the globe.
Returning with ‘Death Magnetic’ in 2008, Metallica delighted fans with a return to their roots. Taking the album on the road, extensive tour dates have meant that the band have been unable to return to the studio.
Now Lars Ulrich has admitted that work on new material is set to begin. “There’s a bunch of balls in the air for 2011,” he told Pulse of Radio. “But I think the main one is we really want to get back to writing again. We haven’t really written since, what, 2006, 2007 and we want to get back to kind of just being creative again.”
“Right now we are going to just chill out and then probably start up again in, I’d say, March or April,” he explained. “And start probably putting the creative cap back on and start writing some songs.”
Metallica were among the most prominent bands to emerge from the first wave of thrash. The band were joined by Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeath who were often referred to as ‘The Big Four’.
Speaking to Pulse of Radio, Lars Ulrich explained that a possible tour uniting all four could be on the cards. “The vibe on this thing is so big, we’d be stupid to ignore it,” he said.
“You know on your iPhone, you can move the weather maps up and down? Well, the ‘Big Four’ is quickly moving up to the top in terms of potential occurrences for the next couple of years.”
The quartet have united frequently in the past, with all four appearing on the recent DVD ‘The Big Four Live From Sofia’.
