Legendary Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has opened up in a new interview, recounting the band’s debauched behaviour in the 80s.
Metallica were a breath of fresh air for the rock scene. Inspired by metal gods such as Black Sabbath, the band were disgusted by the parade of leather clad groups who dominated the scene in the early 80s.
Injecting a dose of punk energy into their music the band swiftly became one of America’s biggest rock acts, catapulting them into a world of enormous record sales and stadium tours. Now well known for being family men at one point Metallica were regarded as being debauched rock ‘n’ rollers.
In a new interview drummer Lars Ulrich reveals that the band were frequently asked by fans to sleep with their girlfriends. “In the early days in America back in the mid-’80s, people would often ask us to fuck their girlfriend,” Ulrich told Uncut.
“The first time it happened to me, we were opening for Ozzy (Osbourne) in 1986 and I was slightly taken aback.”
“But you realise people were serious and you say to yourself, ‘So now I’m fucking your girlfriend, are you round the corner, whacking off? Are You taking pictures? Where do you fit into all this?'”
However Ulrich was keen to point out how disapproving he was of such behaviour, although he did not specify if any band members actually went through with the deed.
He added: “It’s pretty depraved shit, and it’s hard to wrap your head around that when you’re fucking someone else’s girl.”
“It’s not a good thing to ask a band to do, right?”
Metallica released their latest album ‘Death Magnetic’ last year. A massive global hit, the band are now touring the world.
