Thrash giants Metallica are set to release a new live EP featuring tracks recorded on their last tour.
Metallica remain one of the biggest bands on the planet. Despite internal rows, despite spending much of the 90s wearing dodgy clothes and releasing even dodgier albums the band have retained a loyal fanbase.
Returning to their thrash roots on ‘Death Magnetic’ the subsequent tour was a celebration of the group’s career to date. Metallica travelled across the world, and are now set to release a collection of live recordings.
‘World Magnetic’ took the band across the globe, with the new EP focussing on shows in Australia. Posting a new statement on their website, Metallica explained that the collection would stretch between 1989 to 2004.
“You guys, the fans, came to our rescue with some pretty decent bootleg options and we trimmed those down to two songs from each tour in 1989, 1993, 1998 and 2004. In digging a little deeper, it occurred to us that we had tracks that had never before been released as ‘live b-sides’ and that added to the adventure of pulling it all together.”
Titled ‘Six Feet Down Under’ the new live EP is the band’s first release since ‘Death Magnetic’. Their most successful album in over a decade, Metallica are cresting a wave of adulation from fans.
Rifling through bootlegs, the new EP opens with a version of ‘Eye Of The Beholder’ recorded back in 1989. Focussing on the Jason Newsted incarnation of the band, amongst the rarities is an acoustic version of ‘Low Man’s Lyric’ recorded back in 1998.
Other live recordings include renditions of ‘Devil’s Dance’ and ‘Frantic’ before finishing with a version of ‘Fight Fire With Fire’. Charting a traumatic period for the band, the new EP demonstrates that they never lost their savage live appeal.
