R&B hyphenate Mercy’s Cartel returns with new single ‘HORIZON’.
A potent talent quietly making waves in UK music, Mercy’s Cartel blends behind-the-scenes acumen with a thirst for expression. A studio boffin, she is one of two Black recipients of Abbey Road Studio’s scholarship in Music Production and Audio Engineering and is working in their London studio on the engineering team.
But that’s not all. As an artist, she faces outwards – letting the world see her in 360. Reminiscent of Bree Runway in her cross-genre creativity, or SZA in her desire to expand the lexicon of R&B, she’s constantly seeking out new ideas.
Out now, ‘HORIZON’ is a challenging pop hymn, a desire to locate some form of connection with a love fast fading from view. Born from personal experience, the lyrics speak explicitly of mental health and addiction, while also reaching for the purity of love.
She comments…
I wrote this record after experiencing deep concern for a troubled guy I was seeing after a sudden period of “ghosting” when I lived in Bristol. It turns out he was literally in London in crack houses, shooting up heroin and dealing with demons that had nothing to do with me.
‘HORIZON’ is my ode to the nostalgic pull of the 80’s synth-wave era with a poignant narrative of love, substance abuse, and the intoxicating escapism found in the city. The lyrics tell a story of forlorn love and self-destruction, exploring the dark allure of substance abuse as a coping mechanism.
Tune in now.
