The 2008 Nationwide Mercury Prize is almost upon us, with the nominations for the annual prize set to be revealed on Tuesday 22nd July.
The prize is one of the most respected and controversial awards on the musical calendar. In the past, it has signaled seismic shifts in British music, such as when Primal Scream’s “Screamadelica” lifted the gong in 1992. However, the Mercury prize has also come in for some criticism, notably when M People’s debut album beat Blur’s “Parklife” and The Prodigy’s classic album “Music For The Jilted Generation”.
Interestingly, Radiohead have been nominated several times but have never actually won the award – could this be their year?
The prize itself will be awarded on September 9th, before the ceremony itself is broadcast on BBC on September 12th.
