Chillwave producer Memory Tapes has crafted a new free download mix containing entirely new material.
A catch all term, chillwave is / was a broad church. For every scratched, degraded sample there was a dancefloor beat, ready to be played through a soundsystem. Real name Davye Hawk, Memory Tapes stood at the more linear, dancefloor end of the genre.
Releasing second album ‘Player Piano’ earlier this year, Memory Tapes won critical acclaim by mixing the aesthetics of his early, chillwave driven material with something quite distinct. Rapidly becoming an in-demand remixer, Davye Hawk has apparently continued to produce new material by the barrel-load.
Australian imprint Modular run an always enthralling mix series named Modcast, which gives scope for guest producers. Invited to contribute a new mix, Memory Tapes responded by threading together some brand new, completely unreleased cuts.
As the producer himself says:
“I find I listen to mixtapes more than albums a lot of the time, so I wanted to make a new record in the form of a mixtape instead of a single or EP etc. It’s all new, original Memory Tapes stuff just put together in the form of an extended mix. I thought the Modcast would be a cool way to make it available to people quickly and for free.”
