Melon Kali have dropped their brand new sing, ‘Flagship’.
A sugary sweet offering from the Dutch outfit, the track combines soulful grooves with a slick, pop sheen. Launching its listener into the dancefloor, each hook exudes pure, uplifting energy, embracing the live qualities of the band’s instrumentation.
Composed of singer Vivian Tarmidi, bassist Marc Sokpolie, pianist Stan de Kwaadsteniet and Davy Henket behind the drums, Melon Kali continue to build a loyal following. Illustrating the multiple facets of their sound, the band draw influence from Stevie Wonder and Prince, to Victoria Monét and The Internet.
As they gear up towards their highly anticipated album ‘Lilac & Lime Green’, set to release early next year, ‘Flagship’ serves up a promising introduction.
Casting their mind back to the track’s creation process, the group share: “We did a writer’s camp with the band, and normally we jam together and record that so we can work that out later.” They continue, “This time, we wanted to try something else. Everybody came up with a word and Vivian made the lyrics out of that with melody in a separate room. Then we came back together again and she sang the chorus of ‘Flagship’, and the rest followed. The band immediately had a vibe and idea which fitted perfectly for the song.”
