Long term drummer with The White Stripes Meg White is set to auction one of her beloved drum kits.
One half of the Detroit garage rock duo, Meg White’s rudimentary drum skills are part and parcel of the band’s appeal. According to legend she first picked up a drum stick a matter of weeks before the band’s first performance, and while not exactly John Bonham her primitive approach has influenced a generation of drummers.
White is to auction her kit in aid of Detroit musician Jim Shaw, who is battling cancer. Unlike the UK, where the sick are allowed health treatment (largely) free of charge on the NHS, in the United States if you ain’t got health insurance then you can get out, sir.
The kit in question was created especially for the video to the band’s 2003 single ‘The Hardest Button To Button’. An attractive design, it fits in with The White Stripes’ strict aesthetic using only red, white and black.
Other lots available at the auction are signed photos of Iggy And The Stooges, as well as original posters.
Jim Shaw Rock ‘N’ Roll Benefit auction takes place on February 7th, on Cpop Gallery in Detroit.
