Mazes singer Jack Cooper has launched a new side project titled Art Is Cheap.
Mazes are an industrious bunch. Not content with releasing their debut album earlier this year, the band also compiled several early cuts, singles and demos onto the recent ‘IBB Tape’ 12 inch.
Now singer Jack Cooper has launched a solo project. Art Is Cheap finds Cooper deciding to write and record a song in exchange for a title, an idea or even a lyric.
Keeping a blog to chart his progress, the Mazes singer has decided to compile 15 tracks on a new compilation. Jack Cooper is releasing ‘Art Is Cheap’ on BandCamp, with Fat Cat helping with promotion.
Using his blog to reveal the stories behind several tracks, Jack Cooper recently mused on the meaning of ‘Henry, When You’re Young’…
“I’ve had a couple of requests so far from people asking for songs for children. Anna France Inglis Hall wrote me asking for a song for her new nephew Henry. She sent a photo of the scan from when he wasn’t born and a photo of him actually in the world. I’ve been listening to Belle & Sebastian this morning for the first time in aaaages, so the song came out a little twee but I’m ‘OK’ with that. It’s interesting turning my hand to different things… I suppose the lyrics are slightly nihilistic but Henry… take note.”
