Matt Maltese Salutes Chet Baker With ‘My Funny Valentine’

A new take on the jazz staple...

Matt Maltese has shared his take on jazz standard ‘My Funny Valentine’.

The indie troubadour has long has a passion for jazz, something that comes through in his inimitable croon. Invited to take part in a new project celebrating a modern jazz icon, the UK artist couldn’t wait to say ‘yes’ quickly enough.

Matt Maltese is part of the cast on ‘Chet Baker Re:imagined’, a multi-artist tribute which lands on April 11th. Toasting the 70th anniversary of ‘Chet Baker Sings’, it boasts a magical cast of modern day artists, including dodie, Benny Sings, mxmtoon, Eloise, and Matilda Mann, amongst others.

As part of this, Matt Maltese doffs his cap to Chet Baker on a new version of ‘My Funny Valentine’ – a jazz standard keen associated with Chet, it’s given a heady new treatment by the UK vocalist.

A loving salute, Matt Maltese comments…

“Chet Baker was of course a very large influence growing up. A masterful vocalist who taught me how to sing gently and like I mean it. No one should really cover the song I’ve covered, but I hope it can be received as an ode to the greatest to have done it.”
