Legendary Bristol group Massive Attack have admitted that work on their new album is “in a state of flux”.
Massive Attack are one of the most respected groups in the UK. Emerging from Bristol’s Wild Bunch Sound System the band blended hip hop with soul, funk, electronica and much more to craft a new sound.
Dubbed ‘trip hop’ or even ‘The Bristol Sound’ the dark, menacing vibrations of Massive Attack became massively influential. However the group were reduced to a trio over a decade ago, with their last album ‘100 Windows’ being released in 2003.
Since then little has been heard of the group, but Massive Attack roared back into action with news of an upcoming EP. Previewing their new material with a headline slot at Bestival over the weekend, the band stunned fans with an emotional performance.
However a new album could still be a long way off. In an interview with Under The Radar the band’s Robert Del Naja admitted that sessions on the new album have stalled.
“I work really hard,” he stated. “I’m dividing my time between being here (in the band’s studio), painting in the garage next to my house, trying to finish the sleeve, then we’ve got rehearsals over at Bath. Average day, I work from about 11, 12, ’til about 10 at night.”
Meanwhile Daddy G insisted that Massive Attack “have about 10 tracks we’ve mixed or are mixing right now”. Amongst the guest stars fans can expect are Damon Albarn, Guy Garvey and Martina Topley-Bird.
Daddy G went on to suggest that Massive Attack could allow fans to remix tracks from the album. “An album is a big concept to take in and now people want more than the playlist you give them, they want to make their own playlist. People expect more than 45 minutes of music. So, maybe we’ll give them (the songs) away and they can make their own compilation of the tracks that we have,” Marshall explained.
“That was the thing that we’re talking about. We’re working with about 22 tracks from the studio and we’d love for people to remix them. I think more bands should do that with their fans.”
Massive Attack are set to release their new EP ‘Splitting The Atom’ on October 5th.
