Essential Bristol group Massive Attack have confirmed details of their new EP ‘Splitting Of The Atom’.
Bristol has always had a thriving music scene, yet things really began to hot up in the city after the formation of the Wild Bunch soundsystem. Spinning funk, rare groove, soul, hip hop, disco and more the DJ crew’s sets became the bed-rock for the trip hop movement.
Spawning groups such as Portishead and producers like Tricky, the Bristol movement’s first great artists were Massive Attack. Formed by a disparate group of DJs and painters, the band released a series of stunning albums before going on hiatus following the release of ‘100th Window’.
Now Massive Attack are set to return. The group have already confirmed an appearance at the forthcoming Bestival event, but it seems that the Bristol duo are going to have a few new tracks to play.
Massive Attack’s new EP will contain four new tracks and is their first new material in six years. Lead track ‘Splitting The Atom’ features Robert Del Naja, Grant Marshall and reggae legend Horace Andy – a frequent collaborator with the band.
Elsewhere, TV On The Radio frontman Tunde Adebimpe guests on ‘Pray For Rain’ while the EP also contains two special remixes. Bristol singer Martina Topley-Bird features on ‘Psyche’ which is given the re-rub by Van Rivers & The Subliminal Kid.
In addition to this Elbow singer Guy Garvey appears on ‘Bulletproof Love’ which is re-worked by Christoff Berg.
With a new studio album due in February 2010, it seems as if Massive Attack are well on the way to becoming the invincible musical talent they once were.
Massive Attack are due to release their new EP on October 5th.
