Mark E Smith World Cup Song

The Fall singer records unofficial anthem

The Fall icon Mark E Smith has decided to record an unofficial World Cup anthem for the England team.

Music fans of the world rejoice – there will be no official England campaign song for this summer’s World Cup. In the past the charts have been littered with poorly thought out efforts, bought more out of blind loyalty than any sense of musical charisma.

In its place, a number of unofficial anthems are set to be released. Available on download, expect to see ‘Three Lions’ scale the charts once more, while some unexpected faces are throwing their weight behind the team.

Post-punk icon Mark E Smith has recorded a new track called ‘England’s Heartbeat’ featuring some guest stars.

Taking time out of The Fall, Mark E Smith has worked with Jenny Shuttleworth – who records as Girl Peculiar. Meanwhile, former Fall member (one of many!) Ed Blane has also contributed to the track.

Released under the name ‘Shuttleworth’ the impromptu group will make the single available as a download on May 4th. The track will then be released on physical formats from June 7th, just in time for kick off.

“This is not 1974, this is not 1976, you are not at Stamford Bridge, but you are on a Boer Ridge” claim the lyrics. The track also invokes English players to “take care of the invention of your nation”, “socks up at last or be a Brazilian breakfast”.

With a rousing chorus, ‘England’s Heartbeat’ could yet become an unlikely hit, with Mark E Smith’s broad Salford accent to the fore.

Meanwhile, The Fall are gearing up for the release of their new album. ‘Your Future Our Clutter’ is the band’s first for Domino Records and set to be released this summer.
