Mariachi el Bronx, the mariachi band alterego of LA punk band The Bronx, are to release a single ‘Cell Mates’ on the 10th August, taken from the forthcoming album in their new guise.
Sparked when the band were required to play acoustically, Mariachi el Bronx was an idea which took on a life of it’s own, fuelled by the addition of Vincent Hidalgo (son of Los Lobos‘ David Hidalgo) to the line up.
Speaking about the new venture, the band’s frontman Matt Caughthran explained “Mariachi el Bronx touches in the many facets of mariachi music, the most well known being Noerteno as well as jorocho, wasteka, bolero and corridos. It mat seems strange for a band that blast the audience into outer space every night to take this direction, but mariachi is every bit as much of a soundtrack to southern California as punk. So they actually work seamlessly.”
The band will play at August’s Reading & Leeds festivals. They will perform two sets at each site, both in their Bronx and Mariachi el Bronx line ups.
