Make way for some familiar faces, with Los Angeles punks The Bronx set to re-emerge as Mariachi El Bronx.
Based in Los Angeles, The Bronx have spent six years re-defining what punk can look and sound like. With their stunning live shows, the band were the natural choice for Shred Yr Face 2 – touring alongside Fucked Up and Rolo Tomassi.
With three studio albums behind them – all self titled, naturally – The Bronx are set for an unexpected new move. Re-tooling themselves as Mariachi El Bronx the band have recorded a largely acoustic new album.
Produced by John Avila in Los Angeles, Mariachi El Bronx’ self-titled album is due for release later this year and will be preceded by the single ‘Cell Mates’.
Matt Caughthran from the band explains…
“Mariachi el Bronx was probably conceived in August of 2006 in Los Angeles’ infamous “Downtown Rehearsals.” It all started as a way to flip the electric goes acoustic performance garbage, because that’s never good. We were invited to play live on television but decided that a cheesy acoustic version of our song was not what we wanted to do.”
“The project triggered something inside all of us that was unexpected. It’s almost impossible to explain but it felt like discovering a second soul within you. We instantly started writing new songs. The body of this record was written all over the world. As the Bronx played, El Bronx wrote.”
“Once we were home the territorial pissing of punk once again worked their way into our lives as we completed writing for what was to become Bronx III and Mariachi el Bronx. We had more than enough songs for a record, now it was time to cement the sound.”
Making their UK debut back in May, Mariachi El Bronx have already chalked up appearances at London’s ULU and All Tomorrow’s Parties. The band like to mix things up, and sometimes mingle punk with mariachi in the same set.
Fans should look out for their appearances at Reading and Leeds – both Mariachi El Bronx and The Bronx are set to appear.
Mariachi El Bronx are due to release their debut album on August 17th.
