There is a Buddhist saying that the soul chooses its moment to emerge in the world, and that you birth year can reveal much about the energies defining your life. If that’s true, then Maria Wilman is a case in point. Born in ’69 – perhaps the pinnacle of the counter culture – she’s always walked her own path, drawn to outsider voices, and a rock ‘n’ roll spirit.
A songwriter of real depth and empathy, she’s been through a lot, but music has acted as a light to guide by. New single ‘Dark Horse’ finds Maria Wilman emerged from this difficult phase, having learned much about her own resilience.
Produced by Colin Elliot – who has also worked with Mercury nominee Richard Hawley – ‘Dark Horse’ is shrouded in twilight hues, with Maria Wilman emerging into the light of day. “It was always a matter of when I was going to make the jump,” she comments. “I knew it wasn’t going to be never, but at the same time I felt that the train was already passing by and that I didn’t have much to lose.”
The striking video is shot largely in monochrome, with flashes of red in her dress to express a pervasive femininity. The video builds on the themes of this highly personal piece of songwriting, with Maria commenting: “When writing this song, I had the underdog in mind, the quiet person in the room, that hundred-to-one shot. The song rides through elements of loss, loss of the old self to re-emerge as new. Dark Horse embodies resilience, trust in oneself and strength.”
