Mallrat (real name Grace Shaw) will release her new album, ‘Light hit my face like a straight right’, on February 14th 2025.
The announce comes with new single ‘Horses’, which follows the UK garage-leaning ‘Hocus Pocus’ and ‘Ray Of Light’. ‘Horses’, co-written and produced with Alice Ivy, deviates from the electronic blueprint of the early primers. It’s a tearstained lament to the ghosts of one’s past, with Mallrat memorialising her dislocation with her suburban origins.
Of the new single, Mallrat says: “I made this song with my friend Alice Ivy. A lot of the lyrics on this song are about going home and how alone that makes me feel. The first verse is describing catching the train home from school with my little sister Olivia. She has passed away since I wrote this song and so it really makes me miss her.”
‘Light hit my face like a straight right’ is born from a world of magical realism in Mallrat’s native Australia, evidently inspired by light and all it exposes or hides. Mallrat seeks out (real or imaginary) magic in the mundane and grotesque, exploring the “intangible and mysterious allure of human connection”.
