Tributes are pouring in for controversial pop svengali Malcolm McLaren with both Vivienne Westwood and John Lydon paying their respects.
A product of the fertile British art school environment in the 60s, Malcolm McLaren loathed everything the decade stood for. Harking back to an earlier era of brutal rock ‘n’ roll, he would later become a prime mover in the punk explosion.
Helping to found the ‘Let It Rock’ clothes shop – later ‘Sex’ – McLaren helped to start the career of his partner, the designer Vivienne Westwood.
The two would part company in the late 70s, with Malcolm McLaren sadly passing away yesterday (April 8th). Tributes are pouring in for the controversial figure, with his former partner paying her respects.
In a statement Vivienne Westwood recalled the time she first met Malcolm McLaren. “When we were young and I fell in love with Malcolm (McLaren)” the designer said.
“I thought he was beautiful and I still do. I thought he is a very charismatic, special and talented person.”
She added: “The thought of him dead is really something very sad.”
Meanwhile, Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon has paid his own respects. The pair fought for decades, with Lydon accusing McLaren of manipulating the group and Lydon himself. However it seems that John Lydon has chosen to remember a more positive aspetc of his old adversary.
“For me Malc was always entertaining, and I hope you remember that. Above all else he was an entertainer and I will miss him, and so should you”.
ClashMusic once spoke to Malcolm McLaren, asking him for his rules to rock ‘n’ roll success. Read the article HERE.
