The funeral for Malcolm McLaren has seen hundreds of fans pay their respects to the punk impresario.
Malcolm McLaren is one of the most important figures in the history of British pop music. Helping to transform The Sex Pistols into a nation-wide phenomenon the manager then turned to production himself.
Later running for mayor in London, Malcolm McLaren retained an intense devotion to the city. Sadly passing away last week, the punk manager was given a memorable send off yesterday (April 23rd).
McLaren’s family called for a ‘minute of mayhem’ at 12pm yesterday, to mark the punk figure’s passing. Here in the ClashMusic office, we simply put on ‘God Save The Queen’ and cranked up the volume.
Meanwhile, McLaren’s coffin was drawn by four black horses through Camden. Buried in Highgate Cemetery, hundreds of fans lined the streets to pay their respects while shopkeepers and market traders paused from work.
The manager’s coffin was stencilled with the slogan “Too fast to live too young to die” while a car in front was filled with flowers which spelled out “Cash from chaos”.
Following the hearse were four cars and a dark green Routemaster bus, with its destination billed as “Nowhere” – echoing a Sex Pistols sleeve.
The bus had a soundsystem installed, which played punk classics including the infamous Sid Vicious version of ‘My Way’ from ‘The Great Rock N Roll Swindle’ as well as the late era Pistols track ‘Something Else’.
Rest in peace, Malcolm.
