American cult heroes The Magnetic Fields have confirmed details of their new album ‘Realism’.
The Magnetic Fields are one of the most idiosyncratic groups working in the United States today. Led by Stephen Merrit, the band have grown from their slowcore origins to become accomplished songwriters.
Fixated by matters of the heart, Merrit once did the decent thing and compiled a triple album of love songs. Titled ’69 Love Songs’ the collection details every facet of romantic feeling, from the rush of first love to the bitter taste of betrayal
Celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, the band played a number of special shows playing the album in its entirety.
Returning to original material, The Magnetic Fields re-entered the studio this year to work on new songs. The band released the album ‘Distortion’ last year but have wasted no time in getting to grips with new tracks.
Titled ‘Realism’ the band’s latest effort is the third in the ‘no synth’ trilogy. The Magnetic Fields are best known for the buzzing warmth of synthesisers beneath their gentle melodies, but recently Stephen Merrit has banned them from the studios.
Completing the ‘no synth’ trilogy, The Magnetic Fields are set to release ‘Realism’ next year. Containing the seasonal track ‘Everything Is One Big Christmas Tree’ the album is set to be another instalment in a fascinating career.
The Magnetic Fields are due to release ‘Realism’ on January 25th. Tracklisting is as follows:
