Pop icon Madonna has visited the family of a French worker killed in a roof collapse while working on a date for her ‘Sticky And Sweet’ tour.
When Madonna comes to town, the ‘Material Girl’ goes to town. Last year’s ‘Sticky And Sweet’ tour broke records for a solo performer, raking in more ticket receipts than any other jaunt before her.
Announcing a series of dates for earlier this year, the performer thrilled fans with a mixture of greatest hits and some tracks from her recent album ‘Hard Candy’. Taking in dates across the world, the singer relies heavily on her road crew to make the shows happen.
However before a show in Marseilles recently a tragedy occurred. With a number of workers preparing the stage for Madonna the roof of the Velodrome stadium collapsed, killing one crew member outright.
The roof was partially-built, and appears to have caved in on the stadium. Over fifty workers were affected, with a number taken to hospital. Sadly, one more crew member was so badly injured that he later died after receiving medical attention.
Madonna immediately cancelled her show as a result. The singer instead visited the family of the French worker killed in the accident, reports People magazine. Wearing black, Madonna was accompanied by two of her children as she offered her condolences to the worker’s family.
The ‘Sticky And Sweet’ tour re-started with a show in Italy on Thursday night (July 16th). A rather more subdued affair than recent performances, Madonna paid tribute to the victims of the tragedy onstage.
Meanwhile, French authorities have begun an investigation into the tragedy. Some reports are suggesting that an investigation in the deadly collapse could lead to a charge of manslaughter.
Madonna’s ‘Sticky And Sweet’ tour is ongoing.
