She may be the Queen of Pop but even that title hasn’t saved Madonna from the wrath of the Malawian authorities.
Madonna has had a turbulent year. Her Sticky And Sweet tour took in destinations across the world, making it the highest grossing tour of 2008. However the singer also had to endure the collapse of her marriage to British film director Guy Ritchie, with their divorce being made official shortly before Christmas.
Madonna and Guy Ritchie adopted a child from the African nation of Malawi, and it is rumoured that she wishes to take another child from the country into her home. However, it seems that nation’s adoption authorities no longer regard Madonna as being a suitable candidate to take in a young child.
A senior official from Malawi’s Ministry of Women and Child Welfare Development said: “Our official policy is that we do not encourage our children to be sent into broken homes. Madonna’s relationships may negatively affect the adoption of Mercy.”
Since splitting with Guy Ritchie the singer has been linked with married baseball player Alex ‘A-Rod’ Rodriguez and 22-year-old model Jesus Luz. It seems that these relationships have raises suspicions in Malawi, with the New York Daily News quoting a government representative as saying “The news she is linked to another woman’s husband and a young man less than half her age makes us question her morals.”
In a previous interview Madonna claimed she would love to adopt another child from Malawi, but she would only do so if she had the support of Malawian authorities.
Madonna has yet to comment on these new developments.
