UK star Mabel has shared an acoustic take on Britney Spears’ undeniable bop ‘Toxic’.
The London artist’s new album ‘About Last Night…’ is out now, the follow up to her hugely successful debut LP. Our Clash review states: “If anything, she’s managed to turn a lack of fixed identity into a strength, seamlessly flowing between styles to follow the changing tastes of her audience.”
Continuing: “It’s for precisely this reason that ‘About Last Night…’ sounds like such a great leap forward from Mabel’s last album, ‘High Expectations’, which was steeped in an EDM club sound that’s gone a bit out of fashion since we stopped actually going to the club for a year, and started getting all nostalgic for clubs we’d never been to because we weren’t born yet.”
Out now, an expanded edition of ‘About Last Night…’ has hit Apple Music, complete with some bonus treats. Amongst these is an acoustic take on ‘Toxic’, an iconic moment in the career of modern day pop icon Britney Spears.
A faithful rendition that removes the gloss of the original, Mabel adds the lyrics: “Are you with me / One more time baby hit me / Put an end to the circus / Thank God we freed Britney.”
Mabel comments: “I was thinking a lot about her strength and resilience when I was recording it, so I added in a little ‘free Britney’ ad-lib towards the end. I’m hoping her fans will really like that. I was so invested in watching all her trials. She was really everything to me growing up. So if I could ever send her a little message, I would love it if she heard that.”
“Britney is really one of the greats and people said so much horrible stuff about her. Obviously, she’s been through hell. But she still got up there and did the damn thing. I’m just completely in awe of her as an artist and as a performer, but also, just to be where she is now. She gets to live her life and I’m so happy for her.”
