Sri Lankan born singer M.I.A. has become one of the most unlikely stars of the summer, soaring up the US charts and causing no end of controversy – including announcing that she was quitting touring.
The singer told the crowd at Bonnaroo that her performance there would be her last – but in a new interview with American magazine Rolling Stone she has retracted that statement.
M.I.A.’s Clash sampling masterpiece ‘Paper Planes’ soared up the US charts this summer, in part thanks to being sampled itslef on a track by hip hop giants Jay-Z and Kanye West. I always took pride in being a little underground — it really is a very unlikely record to cross over,” says the Sri Lankan/British rapper. “The other songs on the chart are Katy Perry and the Jonas Brothers — then you see ‘Paper Planes’ and it’s cool because there’s hope: ‘Thank God the future’s here.’ “
Featured prominently in the movie ‘Pineapple Express’, the exposure ‘Paper Planes’ has generated has allowed M.I.A. to become a household name in the States.
M.I.A. releases ‘Paper Planes’ on October 13th.
