Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon has come out fighting after press allegations were made claiming the singer was guilty of racist behavior.
Recent tabloid reports reported an incident in a London bar, whilst a recent fall out with Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke has been widely reported. Okereke made the allegation that he was the victim of “an unprovoked racial attack” by some of Lydon’s associates.
Lydon, not known for backing away timidly, has lashed out at the press in a strongly worded appearance on BBC television. The frontman threatened legal action against anyone who accused him of racism, pointing out that his grand children are in fact Jamaican.
Lydon said that “this is an absolute offence to them and me when I read stories like that, that are allowed to go to print absolutely unfounded and have the liberty to take liberties with a man like me and call me a racist when my entire life has proved exactly the opposite.”
The Sex Pistol is famed for his love of reggae and dub music, going as far as acting as an A&R man for the legendary Virgin imprint Front Line. Asked if he was a racist Lydon replied “absolutely not. And any bugger that dares say so is going to have their day in court with me – you understand this?”
Yes we do, John. It is worth reiterating however that the allegations were made against an un-named member of Lydon’s party during the Okereke row, and not Lydon himself.
