Lorde Notches Up First Stateside Number One

Youngest person to do so in 27 years...

Lorde has notched up her first Stateside number one, with 'Royals' sailing to the top of the Billboard charts.

Lorde's success has been both slow burning and immediate. The New Zealand born singer released debut single 'Royals' in the United States earlier this year, and watched as it slowly made its way up the charts.

Becoming a radio staple, 'Royals' has now sold close to 1.9 million copies in total. Last week the track shifted some 294,000 downloads – enough to top the Billboard charts for the very first time.

Tweeting to fans, Lorde said: "get the fkouttahere. royals is NUMBER 1 on BILLBOARD in the USAAA."

Aged just 16 years and 11 months, Lorde becomes the youngest artist to claim top spot on the American charts in some 26 years. Teenage sensation Tiffany stole top spot in 1987 with her cover of 'I Think We're Alone Now' – aged a mere 16 years and one month at the time.
