Wookie has provided FabricLive with a fresh DJ mix, which you can stream / download now.
Funny things, nick names. Take Wookie: a legend in garage circles, until now no one at ClashMusic had given his moniker a second thought. Turns out, the producer’s real name is Jason Chue. Or Chooie, which leads to Chewbacca. Hence Wookie.
Once the in-house producer for Soul II Soul, Wookie is responsible for some genuine, bona fide garage classics. ‘Battle’, ‘Scrappy’, ‘Back Up Back Up’ and more made his reputation, with the producer helping to add a depth, a weight to what was often viewed (at the time, at least) as a commercially driven scene.
Deciding to leave the industry six years ago, Wookie recently re-appeared on the scene. There are rumours of a comeback single, with his sets fusing modern cuts with some of those back-in-the-day favourites.
Stepping in to perform at FabricLive on March 30th, the producer joins a hefty line up. Room One is dominated by DJ Hype, Pascal, Drumsound & Bassline Smith and more, with Wookie appearing in Room Two alongside Jungle icon Shy FX.
