Unreleased material from iconic German group Can will be collected on a new 3-CD collection.
Can are one of those groups where each track is essential. Works of almost complete imagination, each song from the German collective spills out into its own orbit, discovering its own totally idiosyncratic path.
So when news breaks of unreleased material being pulled from the archives, please excuse us for getting a little excited. ‘Can – The Lost Tapes’ will be released later this year, with Mute founder Daniel Miller working with Irmin Schmidt to collate the compilation.
Compiled by Irmin Schmidt and Jono Podmore, and edited by Jono Podmore ‘Can – The Lost Tapes’ is based on reels of tape discovered in the band’s former studio.
Important thing to note: these are not out takes. Rather, these are a series of fully formed songs recorded by Can for various projects but somehow left unreleased.
A quote from Irmin Schmidt: “Obviously the tapes weren’t really lost, but were left in the cupboards of the studio archives for so long everybody just forgot about them. Everybody except Hildegard, who watches over Can and its work like the dragon over the gold of the Nibelungen and doesn’t allow forgetting.”
