Listen: Royce Wood Junior – ‘Bees’

Delicious, syrup-laden machine funk...

Englishmen don't have the funk.

So when Royce Wood Junior attempts to filter classic 80s machine funk – think Cameo, think Prince, think George Clinton – through a modern lens, it comes out as something quite different.

Debut album 'The Ashen Tang' will be released on June 8th, a chopped and screwed vision of plastic production and syrup-laden vocals.

There's a woozy, hip hop influence here, too, reminiscent of J Dilla's later productions or those early FlyLo sides. But let's allow Royce Wood Junior to explain:

"I wanted this record to be a classic songwriter's album," he elaborates in a press quote, "but presented with as broad a production pallet as possible. It's a document of the bittersweet reality of being alive in the 2010s, and hopefully it evokes life's failures and successes with all the embarrassment and humour that an Englishman can muster. All of the ashes and all of the tangs."

New track 'Bees' is online and it's perfect for these blossoming spring days. Packed with colour, you can check it out below:
