Listen: Neon Waltz – Bare Wood Aisles

Caithness newcomers impress...

Music journalists are fond of Scandinavia, of the romantic wastes of the North.

But what of the unexplored places in our own land? Caithness is Britain's most northernly mainland country, a beautifully barren triangle of land which peers into the North Sea.

Neon Waltz call it home. The band share a croft in the countryside, which they use as their own personal laboratory to carve out contagious psychedelic hymnals.

'Bare Wood Aisles' went online a few moments ago, and it's a wonderful step beyond those ragged yet promising early demo recordings.

Opening with a twinkling guitar line, the Vox organ sitting underneath adds a real sense of warmth. Comparisons are oddly Scouse in nature: The Coral's wistful moments, for example, or even cult songsmith Michael Head.

But there's something beautifully Scottish about it all; in the rise and fall, the tidal swell of the drums or even the gorgeous harmonies which seem to hang together in the air and then disappear into the night.
