Following the release of their 2021 EP ‘Gender Studies’, Irish feminist post-punkers M(h)aol (pronounced: ‘male’) have returned with their follow-up single ‘Bored Of Men’.
The song sees the band in their established element; a politically charged, stream-of-consciousness diatribe, teeming with noisey post-punk sensibilities, and snarling flavours of no-wave. While possessing a modern vitality in its own right, unfettered elements of Bush Tetras and ‘Confusion Is Sex’-era Sonic Youth come to surface.
Establishing the song’s lyrical impetus in a matter of minutes, singer Róisín Nic Ghearailt states:
“The ideas had obviously been fermenting in my head for a while, and it was written during *that* extremely disconcerting & alarmingly public court case. The title of the song is very tongue in cheek for me, but it does reference a very real sense of frustration and exhaustion with the Patriarchy.”
The release signals an exciting time for M(h)aol and their fans over the coming months. On July 19th the band are set to play a headline show at The Grace in Islington, and will later embark on a packed festival schedule, including the likes of Green Man, End of the Road, Latitude Festival and Pitchfork Paris.
