Hip-hop's sense of the real has always been rooted in geography, in a sense of place.
As a dedicated student of the rap game Joey Bada$$ absorbed this when still young. Growing up in Brooklyn, he aware of being surrounded by ghosts, by the legacy of hip-hop's golden age.
In a way, 'Brooklyn's Own' is a love letter both to the golden age and to Brooklyn itself. Placed online to coincide with the Notorious B.I.G.'s birthday, it is also dedicated to the borough that spawned him.
The production has that fudged up edge, while Joey's flow remains as impeccable as ever.
At one point the rapper endorses his cyclical role, and he spits: "Resurrect my soul come back as your favourite rapper..."
