Born in Senegal but currently based in Brooklyn, Fatima Al Qadiri almost defied categorisation.
There are elements of UK bass culture in her work, for sure, but then there are inflections borrowed from her own background as well as a probing, internationalist sensibility.
New album 'Asiatisch' will be released this month through Hyperdub, and it's a fantastic, enthralling return. Informing Pitchfork that the album is based on an "imagined China", new cut 'Shanghai Freeway' is an appropriate place to dive in.
Extremely sparse - there's often little more than one or two melodies operating without percussion - it's a blissful, at times brooding cut.
Comparisons could be made to the sino-grime strand, but really this is much which could only come from Fatima Al Qadiri.
Listen to it now.
'Asiatisch' is set to be released on May 5th.
