Listen: Doldrums – Empire Sounds

Toronto based electronics

Stream Doldrums new EP ‘Empire Sounds’ following its release through No Pain In Pop.

In a quiet, almost unassuming fashion No Pain In Pop has released some of the most fascinating music to be made in 2011. A quick glance at its roster provides some ground-breaking talent, with Forest Swords, Echo Lake, Grimes now Doldrums all making their home at the label.

Real name Eric Woodhead, Doldrums is a frighteningly young Canadian producer. Based in Toronto, the beatsmith came of age in the city’s fertile cross-platform arts scene.

Playing warehouse parties, art galleries and more Doldrums eventually came to the attention of neighbour Grimes. Already signed to No Pain In Pop, Grimes linked up the youthful producer with the British label.

Handling the producer’s first EP, ‘Empire Sounds’ is out now through No Pain In Pop. Stylistically, Doldrums shares the twisted, melancholic R&B atmospherics which ripple through Grimes and How To Dress Well, but there is a further magpie tendency on show.

Perhaps acting as a neat cross-Atlantic counterpoint to patten, the pair share a similar disdain for genre lines – with quite different results. Of course, the recent Portishead remix has also added a few reference points for newcomers to the world of Doldrums…
