Listen: Charli XCX – ‘London Queen’

"Driving on the wrong side of the road I feel like JFK..."

Some context:

"My last album was consciously cool. Now, I don’t give a f*ck about that. Being cool is not cool. I’ve realised that what I find cool, and the music I find cool, is so on the line of becoming the worst thing in the world that it’s actually awesome. I like dumb shit. But, in pop music, the dumbest, most simple hooks are the cleverest."

Those are the words of Charli XCX, a pop-not-pop star in waiting who quite simply doesn’t care what you think of her music. So long as you enjoy it, that is.

And – if new track ‘London Queen’ is anything to go by – then you’ll enjoy it a whole lot. Pop-punk riffs set to squealing synth pop, it tells the tale of the last 18 months in the singer’s life: going to America, re-discovering her love for music and conquering the charts.
