Lily Allen Wants A “Proper” Musician’s Union

Following Taylor Swift's publishing row with Scooter Braun...

Lily Allen has posted some thoughts on the recent row between Taylor Swift and Scooter Braun.

Scooter Braun – pivotal in the careers of icons such as Justin Bieber – recently purchased the rights to Taylor Swift's catalogue, sparking a spiky response from the songwriter.

She posted on Tumblr: "I learned about Scooter Braun’s purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world. All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years."

The American star added: "Now Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it."

The row quickly spiralled, with Justin Bieber and Sia supporting Scooter Braun, while 'ME!' collaborator Brendon Urie shared his support for Swift.

Now Lily Allen has offered her thoughts, explaining that this debate underlines the need for a "proper" musician's union.

She writes: "This week we had Taylor Swift expose a pretty brutal side of the music industry, some middle aged multi millionaire white dudes doing what they do best, controlling, belittling and humiliating the very people that they couldn’t do without."

"Now, our very own Kate Nash has done something spectacular here, I think consumers have little to no idea how hard it is to survive in the industry today, please please please if you're lost for things to do this weekend, please watch this. It’s a real eye opener. MUSICIANS WORLDWIDE I BEG WE START A PROPER UNION THAT ACTUALLY WORKS, we need to change this system. POWER IS NEVER GIVEN, IT HAS TO BE TAKEN."
