Lily Allen On Bad Press

Singer claims she took a "beating"

Foul mouthed charmer Lily Allen has spoken about her treatment by the press, claiming she took a “beating” from them after her debut album.

Lily Allen returned recently with her new album ‘Its Not Me, Its You’. A smash hit it was greeted by critical plaudits and spawned the massive hit single ‘The Fear’, which soared to number one on the UK charts.

However the singer has had a torrid time with the press, with snippets from interviews picked up and taken out of context. A recent chat with a journalist turned to the subject of drug use, and Lily Allen wound up defending her views from all corners.

Allen recently travelled to America, where she discussed the British press on a talk show. Referring to the period after her debut album ‘Alright, Still’ the singer admitted she became more famous “for being a train wreck than a singer”.

“I took a bit of a beating from the press first time around. I became more famous for being a train wreck than a singer,” she said.

“I didn’t think I was capable of writing songs and making music.”

The interview has been serialised by British tabloid The Sun, and also included Lily Allen’s view that young women are mis-represented by the press. Whereas men such as Liam Gallagher are lauded for drunken rock ‘n’ roll behaviour, in Allen’s view young women who drink are treated in a very different fashion.

“Young women are represented in a way that isn’t true,” she said in the interview, which has been serialised in The Sun newspaper.

“If a girl is seen having a drink she’s a drunk. If that happens with a guy it’s not portrayed the same way.”

Lily Allen is currently on tour in the United States in support of her recent album ‘Its Not Me, Its You’.
