Canadian songwriting legend Leonard Cohen is set to re-issue his book ‘Death Of A Lady’s Man’.
Leonard Cohen already had a literary background long before he released his debut album. Studying English Literature at university his experiments in prose and poetry won his acclaim across the globe.
Sitting at the forefront of the Canadian Literary Renaissance, Leonard Cohen’s early work is taught in schools. Re-issued to placate the demands of fans, the singer is now set to focus on a lesser known aspect of his canon.
Released in 1978, ‘Death Of A Lady’s Man’ accompanied the album of the same name. A collection of poetry and prose it stems from one of Leonard Cohen’s most productive periods and is a good stepping stone between his early work and the 80s bluster of ‘I’m Your Man’.
Deeply influential by Symbolist poetry, Leonard Cohen is capable to matching the mundane to the transcendental. Moving between poetry and prose ‘Death Of A Lady’s Man’ is not without its faults but emphasises the sheer versatility of his writing.
Centring on love and all its faults, as usual Leonard Cohen’s writing is dominated by religious imagery which glimpses cities from Jerusalem to Rome.
Now a new generation of fans can explore this period of Cohen’s work. ‘Death Of A Lady’s Man’ is set to be re-issued in hardback this May.
Available via Andre Deutsch publishing the new edition is the latest in a series of re-printings which have shed new light on Leonard Cohen’s dual career as a singer and a writer.
