Legendary drummer Hal Blaine has died at the age of 90.
Variety reports that the drummer passed away on March 11th, with Hal Blaine's family confirming the sad news.
A member of the famed Wrecking Crew, this loose-knit conglomerate of session musicians recorded the vast majority of hits to emerge from Los Angeles during the 60s.
Performing on classic cuts by The Ronettes, The Crystals, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, and more, Hal Blaine's style effectively laid down the groundwork for the drums as a pop instrument.
A wonderful musician, his simple, unhurried breakdown on The Ronettes' single 'Be My Baby' has been mimicked by everyone from The Jesus and Mary Chain to The Horrors.
Rest in peace Hal Blaine – long live the Hal Blaine Stamp.
I’m so sad, I don’t know what to say. Hal Blaine was such a great musician and friend that I can’t put it into words. Hal taught me a lot, and he had so much to do with our success – he was the greatest drummer ever. We also laughed an awful lot. Love, Brian pic.twitter.com/vLOX3RIKc6
