Leftfield Planning ‘Something’ For ‘Leftism’ Anniversary

But it might just be a barbecue...

Leftfield's 'Leftism' album was released during the opening weeks of 1995, a time when dance culture was beginning to grapple with the album format.

A stunning creative statement, the group – then revolving around the pairing of Neil Barnes and Paul Daley – fused techno with reggae, punk and a whole lot more besides.

With Leftfield releasing new album 'Alternative Light Source' earlier this year, Clash took this opportunity to get on the phone to Neil Barnes. Now the sole voice behind Leftfield, the wide-ranging chat found the producer offering opinions on everything from vinyl to soundsystems, his dis-regard for heritage to the fundamental need to create.

Of course, we couldn't help but point out that this year represents the 20th anniversary of 'Leftism'. So what does the producer have in store?

"I'm planning a barbecue, actually. A Leftfield barbecue!"

But seriously…

"There are plans to do something. I think it's happened, hasn't it? I don't know. Was it last year? You probably know more than me. It's '95, I think. So it is, this year. The answer to that is that, yeah, there is something planned. The re-issue of the album is something we've talked about, they're working on that. I think there will be something at some point or other. But at the moment it's not on my radar, what's on my radar is this new stuff."

"But yeah, I can't believe that it is 20 years – and that's the truth. God, you made me feel good with that one! But it's brilliant, I have very amazing memories about making it, about working with Paul on that album. It was a stunning time for us. It's a record that will follow us around forever, I suppose. Which is good! We're lucky to have that. If you believe in luck!"

Watch out for a full interview with Leftfield's Neil Barnes later this week.
