Lead singer of legendary Liverpool band The La’s Lee Mavers could be set to record a new album with Babyshambles.
Lee Mavers is one of the true lost talents of British music. Lead singer with The La’s, he carved out a niche of 60s inspired pop that has become hugely influential over the past two decades. Yet in spite of his reputation, Mavers has only released one studio album which enduring a fractious recording process.
After several producers were jettisoned, as legend has it Mavers eventually refused to record with one piece of equipment as it did not have genuine dust from the 60s on it. Eventually pieced together by Steve Lillywhite, The La’s debut album remains a critically acclaimed work.
The group reformed in 2004 for a series of dates but since then little has been heard of the reclusive Mavers. However earlier this year an unusual alliance developed between the songwriter and Babyshambles mainman Pete Doherty.
The twin talents uploaded a video to Youtube featuring footage of a jam session together, while Mavers also joined Doherty onstage in Birmingham recently to run through some old favourites by The La’s.
According to a new interview in the NME, the Liverpool songwriter wants Babyshambles to help record the second La’s album. “He (Mavers) said how much he loved what we do, how we play, how we look,” Ficek said.
“Then Peter said Lee wants us to be his backing band.”
The drummer confirmed that the sessions would involve entirely new material. “Lee said he’s got loads of songs written and he’d like us to get involved,” he said. “I’m not sure where it’ll go from here, but it’s enough to get excited about.”
Unsurprisingly, there is no release date for the new album by The La’s.
