Lauryn Hill Begins Jail Sentence

In a minimum security prison...

Lauryn Hill has begun her prison sentence at a minimum security complex in the United States.

A global icon when barely out of her teens, Lauryn Hill's life has since spiralled away from these heights. Personal problems have been followed by money problems, with the singer finding herself in court accused of tax evasion.

Found guilty of failing to pay taxes on about $1.8 million in earnings back in May, the singer was sentenced to three months in a minimum security prison.

TMZ reports that Lauryn Hill began her sentence yesterday (July 9th) and will remain amongst the general population.

As the singer's legal issues increased earlier this year Lauryn Hill kept a detailed log of her feelings on Tumblr. "I shuddered during sentencing when I kept hearing the term ‘make the IRS whole’… make the IRS whole, knowing that I got into these very circumstances having to deal with the very energies of inequity and resistance that created and perpetuated these savage inequalities. The entire time, I thought, who has made black people whole?!"
