As the final hurdle nears...
Laura Mvula

Laura Mvula has been installed as the bookmaker's favourite to win the Barclaycard Mercury Prize.

Always keenly contested, the Barclaycard Mercury Prize is almost upon us once again. The twelve shortlisted albums have been announced, with the final winner due to be unveiled at a special ceremony on Wednesday (October 30th).

Ahead of this, bookmakers have drawn up the latest odds - and there are some surprises... Laura Mvula has raced out in front, with her soulful debut 'Sing To The Moon' now 5/2 at William Hill.

A critically acclaimed effort, if the album won it would be a real upset with a William Hill spokesperson commenting:

"We have been betting on this award for two decades and nobody can remember a price move like it... It looks like the market underestimated her and if she goes on to win we are going to have a shocker."

Elsewhere, Disclosure's debut album 'Settle' sits at 3/1 while David Bowie's recent effort 'The Next Day' has been placed at 11/2. Domino have three albums on the shortlist, and - somewhat strangely - both Arctic Monkeys and Jon Hopkins are attracting exactly the same odds.

Both 'AM' and 'Immunity' sit at 10/1, while Villagers' '{Awayland}' lingers at 33/1. The latest odds:

5/2 Laura Mvula
3/1 Disclosure
11/2 David Bowie
7/1 Foals
8/1 Laura Marling
10/1 Artic Monkeys
10/1 Jon Hopkins
14/1 Savages
16/1 James Blake
20/1 Rudimental
25/1 Jake Bugg
33/1 Villagers
