Laura Marling On The Mercury

And the success of her new album

Laura Marling has spoken about her reaction to being nominated for the Mercury Music Prize.

With her second album ‘I Speak Because I Can’ Laura Marling escaped the image of a shy teenager. A coming of age experience, the album was the work of an artist confident with her own potential.

Lyrically superb, Laura Marling’s trembling voice marked her out as a performer with a rare emotional edge. Spending the summer playing festivals across Europe, the singer is now preparing for the Mercury Music Prize.

Nominated at tomorrow night’s (September 7th) event, Laura Marling faces stiff competition. The second time the singer has made the shortlist, she recently admitted that she was relieved not to have won with ‘Alas I Cannot Swim’.

“I don’t really understand awards…” she told The Guardian. “Everyone gets given a little statue to say that they were nominated and I gave that straight to my parents so they’ll have another one.”

Continuing, the singer revealed her nerves at the previous ceremony. “When they were about to announce it I did think I won’t be able to stand up if they say my name” Laura Marling explained.

“In retrospect, it was probably pretty good that I didn’t (win), because my career would have taken a very different turn.”

Notably, boyfriend Marcus Mumford has also been nominated for the Mercury. Mumford And Sons have been rewarded for the effort in crafting their hugely successful debut album ‘Sigh No More’.

“I think it will be really funny” she explained. “Not funny. You know… It’s really bizarre. I just can’t believe it.”

The winner of the Mercury Music Prize will be announced tomorrow night (September 7th).
