Laura Marling Goes Farming

Folkie type goes back to nature

Fast rising songwriter Laura Marling has spoken exclusively to ClashMusic about her recent stint on the farm.

Way back in the 70s, unprecedented economic turmoil triggered by an oil crisis in the Middle East led to the ‘back to the land’ movement. A host of songwriters got dirt under their fingernails, swapping a guitar for a shovel.

Sound familiar? Well, the social circumstances are the same and now Laura Marling has revealed that she recently spent time working on a farm.

With her new album ‘I Speak Because I Can’ screaming up the charts, Laura Marling has begun to claim sales which match her critical pedigree. However the London based singer isn’t set to get carried away, having recently worked on a farm.

“I just go there and hope someone gives me a job,” she told ClashMusic. “I don’t know anything about farming, but my boyfriend is a farmer so I thought I’d better learn. It seems so logical to me.”

Continuing, Laura Marling reveals that she has taken on some of the habits of a farmer’s wife. The singer has begun to knit, while she also decried the practices of major supermarket chains: “Surely no one really benefits from that. Farmers seem to have it just right.”

In addition to this Laura Marling also revealed that she has been working on a collection of children’s stories which she hopes to release.

However that will come after the release of her new album. “I’d be surprised if my new sound alienated anyone because it’s just not far enough in a different direction,” she told ClashMusic. “It’s more upbeat so I think people will enjoy it.”
